Poster: Exposition Internationale d’affiches

L’Initiative du club des partenaires du Musée Toulouse-Lautrec

Dutch designer Anton Beeke was taken with the idea of celebrating the 100th anniversary of Toulouse Lautrec. Together with some french friends he organised an exhibition by asking 100 designers around the world to do a poster on the theme. This is mine. Lautrec paid frequent visits to London, and one of these took place early in 1895, just at the time when the first of Wilde’s two trials was taking place. Lautrec was fascinated by Wilde’s appearance, and wanted to make a portrait. Wilde refused to sit, but languidly allowed the artist to ‘look at him’ once or twice.
